Advocacy actions bring early awareness and short time responds from authorities. Our arguments go in favor of a people´s cause, in a legal case or acting support to help citizens to stand up for their environmental rights. Our actions include both, protecting the public from environmental hazards and protecting the natural world in order to bring about justice and positive change in human rights and environmental issues.

CIAM has already established a successful track record proving validity to its advocacy vision spearheading the effort to protect Panama’s natural and human capital and implementing a two-pronged strategy focused on changing public opinion and influencing policies.

Our advocacy initiatives also include work with community-based organizations, specially the Panamanglar Network we created, whose mission is the defense of mangroves and wetlands across the country, promoting legislative and regulatory change. We provided capacity building and training Professors in schools near the Panama Bay Wetland area.

CIAM works hand in hand with investigative journalists; our collaborations resulted in an important and detailed series of articles that show mass deforestation of protected areas, conducted legally through government endorsement and “community permits”. The media coverage has helped to raise awareness about government inefficiency; corruption within institutions and the opacity of the logging permit system.

Due to the reputation of CIAM, we are able to foster positive and favorable public opinion to accomplish immediate and short-term.  As part of the The Access Initiative the largest civil society network in the world dedicated to ensuring that citizens have the right and ability to influence decisions our advocacy is an early warning tool increasing the impact of CIAM´ s actions.

The greatest service CIAM rendered as a public interest fund has been  consistent advocacy as the key to scale-up environmental awareness and institutional reform to bring a more sustainable country. In our experience, there’s no better way to make a high impact on social change than the communities motivated to join the environmental advocacy efforts.

CIAM has been pioneer in successful advocacy campaigns to defend and promote the conservation ecosystems such Contaminas, against open pit mining; Save the mangroves in the Panama Bay Wetlands; Charges River Clean Water, Environment, Health and Cancer.
